The huge fire in the car park at Luton Airport has halted flights

An enormous fire has broken out in one of the terminal car parks at Luton airport, which has resulted in the suspension of all flights to and from the airport.

In a tweet sent out just before 10.30 o’clock on Tuesday (10 October), Luton stated that it has temporarily halted flight operations and encouraged visitors to stay away from the area.

Crews were battling what was described as a “rapidly escalating fire” when Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue confirmed their response at about 8.45 p.m. and soon after 9.30 p.m., the event was deemed a major incident.

Flights are now canceled till Wednesday at three o’clock in the afternoon. Due to “severely restricted” access to the terminal, passengers are strongly encouraged to forego their plans to visit the airport.

As of 6.30 a.m. on Wednesday, there were more than 70 cancelled flights listed on the departure board at Luton Airport. These cancellations mostly affected services provided by easyJet, Wizz Air, and Ryanair. Upwards of 50 arrivals were also expected to be disrupted on Wednesday.

The fire started at Terminal Cark Park 2, which Luton reported had experienced “partial structural collapse” before the fire started. However, the fire and rescue agency said that there had been “significant” damage to the structure.

The fire department estimates that there might have been anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 automobiles parked in the lot. It has been reported that five people, including four firemen and a member of the airport personnel, have been transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation. Another was taken to the hospital for treatment and released there on the spot.

A significant portion of the top level of the parking garage can be seen in the video released by the fire and rescue department being consumed by flames, and smoke can be seen pouring from the area.

At its height, the fire required the assistance of fifteen fire engines, more than one hundred firemen, and three aerial appliances. All of these resources were brought to the site. Aside from the fire and rescue service, there were also police officers and ambulance workers there to provide assistance.

The most recent statement to come from Luton airport was released at 3.30 in the morning on Wednesday, and it stated as follows: “Emergency services continue to respond to a significant fire in Terminal Car Park 2, which has now resulted in partial structural collapse.”

“Until noon on Wednesday, October 11, all flights are canceled. Please get in touch with your airline for the most up-to-date information regarding your flight.” It is strongly recommended that passengers avoid traveling to the airport at this time since access is still very limited.

At 8:47 p.m., the Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service reported receiving reports about a fire that involved a vehicle that was located on level three of a multi-story parking garage at Luton airport.

“Fire crews were faced with a rapidly escalating fire and declared a major incident at 9.38pm,” according to news reports. The ferocity of the fire caused major structural collapse, which led to the quick spread of the fire throughout the building.

It is estimated that there might have been as many as 1,200 automobiles in the parking lot at the time of the incident, all of which were ultimately destroyed. The fire was brought under control by the use of firefighting efforts, which also served to safeguard neighboring structures, cars, airplanes, and the Luton Dart.

The statement went on to say, “At the height of the response to this incident, there were over a hundred firefighters, 15 rescue pumps, and three aerial appliances.”

“We would like to thank our fire colleagues from Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, and Northamptonshire as well as London Fire Brigade for their support. In addition, we would like to thank Bedfordshire Police and East of England Ambulance.”

“Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will continue to undertake firefighting operations to help restore travel services to the public as soon as is possible.”

The fire department has not yet provided a statement about a possible cause.
