Champions League Final Left Russia Due To The Ukraine War

The 2022 Champions League final will now be hosted in Paris, after Russia’s removal from the competition as a result of the country’s invasion of Ukraine. This year’s Final of the European Football Club Championship was scheduled to take place on May 28 at the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg.

After meeting on Friday (25 February), however, the governing body of the competition, UEFA, apparently agreed that the tournament will instead be held at the Stade de France in Paris, as reported by AFP.

BBC Sport reports that the organization has ordered Russian and Ukrainian clubs and national teams to play their home matches elsewhere from the area.

“Together with the French government, Uefa will completely support multi-stakeholder efforts to secure the provision of rescue for football players and their families in Ukraine who are facing extreme human suffering, damage, and displacement,” the organization said in a statement.
