Where To Discover Europe’s Hottest Winter Sun

Where to obtain your daily dose of vitamin D in Europe throughout the colder months of the year.

Are you in desperate need of a dosage of vitamin D and seawater?
Can’t wait for the summer to arrive?
Below, we’ve selected some of our favorite destinations in Europe that will still provide you with a dose of sunshine even during the off-season.

Valetta is the capital of Malta

The average temperature in winter is 17 degrees Celsius.

This is the greatest place to visit if you like history and (nearly) year-round sunlight.

With 300 days of sunlight each year, ancient temples, and crystalline seas that are inviting even in the depths of winter, Malta is the most modest jewel in the Mediterranean (and remains on our green list). In addition to being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the golden-hued city of Valetta was named the European Capital of Culture for 2018 — and its museums, fortifications, and medieval cathedrals make it a must-see destination.

Seville, Spain

The average temperature in the winter is 18°C.

Best for: a calmer couple’s city break in a smaller city.

The sun-drenched city of Seville is Spain’s best-kept secret, thanks to its warm temperatures throughout the year. The capital of Spain’s Andalusia province, which is smaller and more romantic than its busier equivalents Barcelona and Valencia, is home to the Alcázar castle complex, which was erected during the Moorish Almohad dynasty, as well as the very Instagrammable Plaza de Espaa (Spanish Square).

Lagos is a city in Portugal

The average temperature in winter is 17 degrees Celsius.

People-watching and lounging on the beach are perfect pastimes.

Thousands of British tourists flock to the Algarve as soon as the first hint of summer appears on the horizon, but the Portuguese seaside city of Lagos is probably even more attractive in the winter when the masses have dissipated, according to locals. Take a trip to the coast to witness the famed rock formations and golden beaches that have become so popular on social media, or just settle inside the old town with a pastéis de nata in hand and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city.

Crete, Greece

The average temperature in winter is 17 degrees Celsius.

The ideal spots to visit for crystal clear waterways and hiking trails are found in the following locations.

While Crete would be ideal for lounging on a day bed with a nice book, it is also an excellent destination for exploring. It has plenty to offer every style of traveler, with secluded beaches, quaint towns, and steep canyons to explore. Samariá Gorge, with its six-hour path, is a must-see for adventure enthusiasts, while beach lovers can drive south to the magnificent Elafonisi lagoon, which has pink dunes and azure-colored seas.

Paphos is a city in Cyprus

The average temperature in the winter is 18°C.

It’s the greatest place to go beach hopping and sightseeing in the area.

Cyprus has traditionally been a popular summer vacation destination for British tourists. We make one million trips there each year (during regular business hours), but don’t let that put you off. The coastal city of Paphos, located on the island of Cyprus, is home to both historic towns and picture-perfect beaches, providing a balanced combination of the two. The city has a romantic atmosphere, which may be attributed in part to its relationship with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, who was said to have been born in the Old Town of Kouklia.

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands

The average temperature throughout the winter is 21°C.

Those who like outdoor activities as well as those who enjoy spending time in the sun will enjoy this.

The Canary Islands, with their surreal vistas and year-round subtropical temperatures, are a sure bet for wonderfully pleasant nights even in the dead of winter. Just remember to take your one-piece swimsuit. With over 300 volcanic cones (most of which are dormant), blackened lava fields, and valleys dotted with palm palms, Lanzarote has been designated as a UNESCO Geopark since 2015. These natural wonders may be explored through the island’s many hiking and cycling paths.

Karpathos, Greece

The average temperature in winter is 17 degrees Celsius.

It’s excellent for relaxing in a beautiful atmosphere while doing nothing.

The Greek islands are mostly inactive throughout the winter months, with the exception of several hotels and restaurants, which close their doors between November and April.

The ideal time to visit is also during the week, when there are less visitors. Skip the Cyclades and go east to the Dodecanese islands, which are located close off the coast of Turkey and are less crowded. In addition to being the second-largest of these islands, Karpathos is the least commercialized, making it the best place to get a true sense of Greek culture and tradition. In this region, the settlements are dotted with whitewashed sugar cube houses, and the water is constantly glittering.

Sicily is located in Italy

The average temperature in the winter is 18°C.

Ideal for: foodies and wine lovers who appreciate fine cuisine and fine wine.

The biggest island in the Mediterranean, which cuts a lonesome figure off the coast of Italy, is a treasure mine of culinary pleasures. Agrigento’s Concordia temple and the columns of Selinunte are both much less crowded with tourists during the winter months, while the beaches are almost completely deserted at the same period.

Those who like good food will find a sanctuary apart from the usual tourist hotspots. The city of Noto is home to the famed Café Sicilia and the famous almond granite with brioche buns, while Taormina is known for having the greatest seafood on the island.

The Azores are located in Portugal

The average temperature in the winter is 18°C.

When it comes to adrenaline seekers searching for something a bit different, this is the finest option.

Despite the fact that this desolate island in the middle of the Atlantic seems to be far away, the five-hour trip is just slightly longer than a flight to either Turkey or Greece. These nine islands are characterized by their dramatic sceneries. Despite the fact that So Miguel has lake-filled calderas and Pico is a high peak, it is the abundance of activities that will entice visitors to the region.

The diving, climbing, sailing, and canyoning in the Azores are all world-class activities, as is the whale watching. The environment here is also mostly environmentally friendly, with just five percent of the land area having been developed, and there are several marine parks to explore.
