The tenth anniversary of a key tourist attraction in the city’s redeveloped docklands has been marked with a party.

According to a research, Titanic Belfast has generated an estimated £430 million (€507 million) in direct expenditure in Northern Ireland since it first opened its doors ten years ago.

From March 31, 2012, to the present day, the award-winning attraction, which has become iconic with the city’s skyline, has welcomed about 6.5 million people from 145 different countries since it first opened its doors.

According to a research by Deloitte, which was commissioned to commemorate the center’s ten-year anniversary, the expected economic impact of the facility, which is located in the heart of Belfast’s redeveloped docklands region, was described.

On the occasion of the ship’s 100th anniversary, Titanic Belfast also announced a multimillion-pound renovation of its galleries, which chronicle the ship’s history from its construction in Belfast shipyards to its ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912.

In an interview with Titanic Belfast’s chief executive Judith Owens, she explained that the £430 million in direct economic impact was exclusively tied to the spending of visitors who had traveled to Belfast particularly to see the site.

She asserted that the indirect benefits of the center to the economy will be far bigger.

We are delighted to announce a multimillion-pound gallery refreshment programme as part of Titanic Belfast’s 10th anniversary celebrations, which will deliver a world-class spectacle by combining innovative technology with the authentic Titanic story to deliver an enriched, emotive and immersive visitor experience that will ensure Titanic Belfast remains a must-see global attraction for years to come,” she said.

Titanic Belfast has grown from strength to strength since its grand opening on March 31, 2012, and has played a significant part in the rebirth of tourism, not just in Belfast and Northern Ireland, but across the island of Ireland.”

“We have solidly established ourselves on the local, national, and worldwide scene in the previous ten years, earning a slew of major awards, including being voted the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction,” says the CEO.

The fact that 82 percent of tourists originate from outside Northern Ireland demonstrates the critical role that this iconic structure plays in attracting inbound tourism.

“As one of Belfast’s flagship locations, Titanic Belfast has not only boosted leisure travel, but it has also played a crucial role in reinvigorating the city’s event economy, having hosted more than 3,000 business and leisure events since opening its doors.”

“We are absolutely dedicated to conserving the authenticity of Belfast’s marine and industrial history, as well as to playing a crucial role in the recovery of local tourism after the epidemic, especially once international travel restarts,” said the Belfast City Council.

“On behalf of Maritime Belfast Trust, the charity that owns Titanic Belfast, we would like to congratulate Titanic Belfast on reaching this 10-year milestone as well as on generating a local economic impact of £430 million,” said Kerrie Sweeney, chief executive of Maritime Belfast Trust, the charity that owns Titanic Belfast.

“Situated in the heart of Belfast’s Maritime Mile, it contributes significantly to transforming our famous waterfront into a dynamic and easily accessible historic attraction.”

Titanic Belfast’s refurbishment project has been awarded to OPERA Amsterdam and Studio Louter after an international bidding process. OPERA Amsterdam and Studio Louter will design and implement the project.
