Earlier this month, MSC Cruises broke construction on a $350 million terminal in PortMiami, which would ultimately serve as a refueling and charging station for its most ecologically friendly ships.
The terminal would be capable of handling three ships at the same time and accommodating up to 36,000 passengers per day. It is anticipated that the project will be finished by the end of 2023.
MSC claims that the port will be able to handle its biggest and most ecologically conscious cruise ships, including the company’s newest flagship liner, MSC Seashore, when it opens in 2019. Ships will be able to connect to the local electrical grid while berthed at the port, as PortMiami intends to make connection from the shore possible in the future.
The opening of the new port, according to Ruben Rodriguez, president of MSC Cruises USA, demonstrates not only the company’s commitment to expansion in North America and South Florida, but also its efforts to achieve environmental sustainability and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The building, which is being designed by global architectural firm Arquitectonica, will be built by Fincantieri Infrastructure, according to a statement from MSC.
A multi-level parking garage with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles will be part of the complex. A total of three docks will be built by MSC, with the third being built by Miami-Dade County.
